I was with my dear old mother, When we heard the news of President Mills; The president was not a brother, neither my father, But the news gave us both chills. As the woman next to us queried us In order to verify the truth in this most unfortunate of news’, I noticed drops of tears in mother’s eyes. Of the president she had her own views, But no man’s passing pleases the soul Even the most evil of them all; Much less this noble man whose goal It was to make our Ghana stand tall; The eyes of all who, with us, heard Wept or stared in silent thought, The passing of this Ghanaian, born and bred, Who for eight years or so for this country fought; Who would’ve thought, even for a split second, When they woke from bed this early morn That our dearly beloved president will be beckoned By the heavens to a new day’s dawn We’ve heard and speculated for the past two years or so How he’s been unwell and sick But never did we think he’ll sooner rather than later go Never did we think [the bucket] he’d this soon kick But now President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills is no more; A noble man has bitten the dust, A man who loved peace as much as he hated war, His name now rests with other noble men of the past. As we listened to the radio, And as the journalists did their jobs frantically [I speak of JOY 99.7 FM Stereo] I ‘soaked’ in the tributes as they came methodically; In all the messages that came, Three or four words found repeated mention; Though a man of great fame, He was humble, calm and composed; eight years past pension Father of all he said he was, Friend of the rich as well as the poor; To say a bad word against him, you’ll have no cause A humble man through to the core. Our nation has lost a great son This land has lost in the good old professor A peaceful man of the pen and not of a gun, A man of democracy and not an oppressor; To his wife and family we can only say, The maker gives and He alone takes Take heart in the Lord’s mighty way For yours and for all our sakes‛ To the soul of our president, we proclaim Fare thee well dearest Sir, till someday we meet again. The good Lord has called you to greater glory. For me it is the best option because your work here on earth is done. Although to me you are a mentor, dad, friend and earthly source of inspiration, you meant so much to God and HE had to call you. My heart goes out to Dr. Mrs. Naadu Mills. Be strong because Prof. is with the Lord. My heart also goes out to the family,friends, THE NDC and the People of Ghana at large. I'd grow to serve this country just as my mentor has done.
